Mythical Naukuchiatal

Been to Naukuchiatal? Could you find a spot from where all nine corners of the lake can be seen at once? This question together with other legends about the lake are enough to raise curiosity and then an urge to make it point to visit the place which was not even in the tourism map three decades ago and had its virgin charm. For a long time the lake was considered sacred, today it’s a tourist hotspot. Situated 25.2 kms (57 mins) from Nainital, this place shares an equal charm.

There’s a myth that if one can find a spot from where all nine corners of the lake can be seen, one will be blessed with good fortune if pure form heart, or will die. I am not sure if anyone found any such spot and the fate that followed! At best, I’m told, eight corners, barring one, could be viewed from a nearby hilltop.

The lake has a Pandava legacy; it’s believed to be formed when Nakul, the fourth Pandava brother shot an arrow into the ground. The Pandava are believed to have taken their last bath in the lake before ascending to the heavens. So, the story goes that if one takes a dip in its waters with a clear conscience and good intentions, wishes will be fulfilled. But wait! Hear a story first- before you decide to take a plunge! The story goes that, hundreds of years ago, nine sages sat in the nine corners of the lake and meditated for peace and prosperity. After accomplishment of their mission, they submerged themselves to be the eternal guardians. One day a young fisherman slipped and drowned in the lake. As he sank to the bed of the lake, he saw a huge subterranean temple there and met the nine saints who promised to restore his life provided he did not tell anyone about the temple. The boy promised not to reveal the secret and his life was restored. But next day, he confided in his friends and his body was found later in the placid waters. Nowadays, of course the waters have retreated due to lack of rain and snow. Earlier, they say the waters were a darker blue, as if by some celestial charm. Today, they lament, it’s different.

Nevertheless, Naukuchiatal is famed not only for the magnificent lake but also for an array of other fascinations. With the majestic mountains and the verdant greenery embracing it to camouflage, with the musical serenade of the chirping flow makes the entire atmosphere heaven-like! Appealing sites of paddocks and terraced fields make it a perfect and pleasing destination. Naukuchiatal is situated at an altitude of 1220 m and is bounded by deep, woody forests and lustrous greenery which would enthral every visitor with it’s imposing charm. The jungles are the abode of Himalayan flora and fauna and the nature walk through this woody forest would proffer the great luxury of marvellous experience.
