Side effects of drinking too much coffee

A freshly brewed cup of coffee is certainly the best way to kick start your day. Consuming moderate amounts of coffee may have more health benefits than risks. While many people drink coffee to make them more energetic and active, drinking too much of it can cause unpleasant side effects.

Caffeine can keep you alert and awake but heavy daily caffeine (more than 500 to 600 mg/day) can cause problems such as insomnia, restlessness, nervousness, stomach upset, dehydration, abnormal health rhythms, headaches or dizziness. Perhaps, caffeine may not be safe for people who are highly sensitive to its effects or who are undergoing certain medications. A high volume or prolonged use of caffeine in the body can cause the muscles to cramp or move erratically. Caffeine increases the need to urinate because it increases blood flow through the kidneys and dilates the blood vessels, making the kidneys produce more waste.

Caffeine also causes hallucinations which are believed to occur when an overdose of caffeine causes the body to become stressed. This is a result of high adrenaline levels. Too much caffeine can even cause addiction or dependence. Caffeine causes your adrenal glands to release more adrenaline, which causes your blood pressure to increase. When people comsume too much caffeine, they can go into what is known as caffeine intoxication, where they become confused and disoriented. This is when a caffeine coma can occur, as well as seizures. People with caffeine sensitivities can even die from caffeine overdose. High dose of caffeine pills are a known cause of many caffeine overdoses.

Like all drugs, overdose of caffeine has risks. And its important to be mindful of the hazards and take useful action against the coffee addiction.
