Organ donation inching closer to 2015 mark.

It's good news for the city as, after a long time, there has been three consecutive days when it has witnessed 3 cadaver donations that has saved 10 lives. With these donations, the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) said that the city has inched closer to the 2015 cadaver donation mark of 42.

“Last year's cadaver donation was a record and the highest. We are happy that this year, till 25 July, 34 cadaver donations have been done across the city,” said Dr Sujata Patwardhan, general secretary, ZTCC.

On Sunday, a 65-year-old was admitted to Nanavati Super Speciality Hospital (NSSH) and he was declared brain dead. His family has given a consent to donate his organs. His kidneys were donated at NSSH, while his liver was given to a 17-year-old boy at KEM Hospital. His eyes were donated at Roshni Eye Bank, Lilavati Hospital.

ZTCC is a state body that makes cadaver organs available to those on the waiting list. Every patient who is waiting for an organ has to be registered with the ZTCC. As per ZTCC, the main aim is to promote cadaver organ donation and transplantation. It also follows the objective to help every person waiting for an organ by making sure that the organs are distributed fairly according to the guidelines prescribed by the government.

“It is a good sign that people are getting aware of organ donation. Notifications of brain dead patients have increased in public hospitals which is a good sign. All public hospitas should take serious interest in cadaver donation which definitely helps curb illegal practice,” said Patwardhan.

It is a known fact that government hospitals get a number of brain dead patients as compared to private hospital. It is high time that government medical college and hospitals should start actively reporting brain dead cases. The government needs to make them accountable. Public hospitals have been lagging behind because of lack of motivation and machinery.

“This welcome move, slowly hospital working on seriously for cadaver donation they given the proper information to the relatives of brain death patient. The counsellor playing a major role in this process. I think not only government but all the NGO and private hospital also work towards to spread a word about the cadaver donation. This is the noble cause every one have to participate for such great cause.” said Dr Jayesh Lele, president, Indian Medical Association, Maharashtra.
