1. MYTH - If you’re overweight, you’ll automatically get type 2 diabetes.
FACT - Being overweight or obese is a serious risk factor, but there are other factors that put you at an increased risk. Having a family history of diabetes, having high blood pressure, or being sedentary are just some of these other factors.
2. MYTH - People with diabetes are more likely to get cold and other illness.
FACT - You are no more likely to get sick if you have diabetes. However, an illness can make your diabetes more difficult to control.
3. MYTH - You'll know if you have diabetes by your symptoms.
FACT - Not always. Type 2 diabetes often goes undiagnosed because it usually has few or no symptoms when it first develops.
4. MYTH - People with diabetes can't donate blood.
FACT - You're eligible to donate blood as long as your diabetes is well controlled.
5. MYTH - Being on insulin means you don’t have to make any lifestyle changes.
FACT - When you’re first diagnosed, your blood sugar may be controlled adequately by die and exercise eventually, however, your medications may not be as effective as they were, and you’ll likely need insulin injections to help control your blood sugar levels. Managing your diet and exercise with insulin is very important to help keep blood sugar levels in their target range and to help avoid complications.
