THE GROWTH OF SLUMS

Industrialization has led to tremendous increase in urban population. This has resulted in overcrowding of urban centers and growth of slums. The plight of slum dwellers is really sad because of lack of civic amenities, poverty and generally pathetic living conditions. The inflow of migrants to the cities is a reality that has to be accepted. The slums problem can be solved only if the factors that lead to migration of rural folk to cities is looked into. Also it has to be seen that if the cities are not to be plunged into chaos because of rising population. then adequate housing facilities, infrastructure and job opportunities should be created to absorb the extra population. However, the problem of slums is not an easy one to solve, but it the government is serious to improve the lot of the slum dwellers, it should seriously implement the suggestions of various commissions and look into the problem realistically.

Large scale urbanization leads to several complications in cities. Civic amenities fall short of needs. Law and order problem deteriorates Prices of essential commodities shoot up. Most important of all, the housing problem become acute. The house-rents become very high. Middle Class people find it difficult to afford the high rents. The lower income groups find it impossible to live in decent comfortable houses. The necessary outcome of this is slums in cities. They become widespread and are to be found in almost all parts of cities.
