We love our teachers, we admire them. We mumble behind them for scolding, we fumble in front of them. We listen to them mesmerizingly; we try to imitate them as well.
We learn to dream with them, we usher them our gratitude! Teachers are those, who shape our lives. Starting from our great Indian epic, The Mahabharata, teachers like ‘Dronacharya’ gained our attention who trained five Pandavas, among which Arjun was commendable, but how can we avoid mentioning the name of ‘Ekalavya’, whose social status though not permitted him to be Drona’s student formally but with all determination built a statue of Drona and became an expert in some miraculous skill. If this is a grand part of history, then, the influence of Chanakya on Chandragupta Maurya was also much.
Then if we come down a long period, we have the great teacher Henry Louis Vivian Derozio who has dedicated even a sonnet to his students called – “To The Pupils of Hindu College.” The Influence of teachers are never ending and the great personalities like Hellen Keller has dedicated her success to her teacher Miss Sullivan. Micahel Madhusudan Dutta, the immensely talented Bengali poet was totally moved by his teacher D.L. Richardson whom he met at the Hindu College.
We often heard, ‘Charity begins at home’ but still our gurukuls are heavens. Fat books are there to mug any subject but it can never be a substitute to teacher who teaches us ‘How to be a good human being’!
And salute to great teacher Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, on whose birthday (5th September), teacher’s day is celebrated. He was a staunch believer of education, the well known diplomat, scholar, President of India (1962). So teachers, whoever you are, we ushers on you a handful of gratitude for touching our lives with your magic words.
