“So shines a good deed in a naughty world” said William Shakespeare, implying thereby that anything good stands out in this bad and selfish world. Similarly a person with a good character stands out among the crowd and is recognized as such. Success comes to him sooner than later, in his chosen field of activity without him having to wait for an opportunity.
A person with a good character is a gem to the society. The success that he achieves has the stamp of his character therefore more stable and lasting. On the contrary we find people today hankering for success. They are ready to do anything to seize the opportunity to become great. Such a success is very transitory and is likely to depart sooner or later.
Success has different connotations for different people. Accumulation of wealth could be barometer of being successful for some while for others it could be exercise of power, authority, knowledge or social status. We can aspire for success in any of the spheres but without the foundation of a good character we may not be able to seize the opportunity when it comes our way. A characterless person, even if he does get an opportunity, is bound to frit it away.
“Character maketh a man†such is its significance. A man without a character is more akin to an animal that survives purely on instinct. While on the other hand, a person with good character has a good wholesome personality. He is appreciated for this virtue and gradually with this recognition many opportunities for success come his way. This is virtue that stands us in good stead throughout our lives for in the words of John Milton, “Virtue may be assailed, but never hurt. Surprised by unjust force, but not enthralled.â€
The character is the touchstone of success. One must nurture this virtue very early in our lives to be successful for as a saying goes “There is no shortcut to successâ€.
