International Women's Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated every year on 8 March. It is celebrated all over the world. It admires the movements for the rights of women. The first observance of the Women's Day was on 28 February, 1909 in New York but gradually instead of Feb 28 the International Women’s Day was held on March 8. As the women of the Soviet Russia gained suffrage in the year 1917, the particular day of March 8 became a national holiday there. After that this particular day was celebrated by the socialist movements and it became a major movement in the communist countries. Later in 1975, it was adopted by the United Nations. The first observance was called “National Women's Day”. This day also symbolises gender equality.

The International Women's Day has come to be increasingly related to feminism and for the equal rights of women. This day has been observed since the 1900s till today and it is not in any association with one group. This day has a great intensity as it brings together state governments all over the world, women welfare and empowerment organisations, charities and non profit organizations. The themes play an important role in this day’s celebration. It highlights the atrocities faced by women and the many struggles faced by all women. In 2010 International Women's Day, the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) brought forward to the world's attention all the hardships and struggles faced by women as due to the armed conflicts and humanitarian crisis. The former US President Barack Obama announced the month of March to be the Women's History Month. But in the same year several people in Egypt's Tahrir Square came out into the streets to harass women coming up for their rights on this occasion.

The International Women's Day is a very significant event for the world. The 2018 International Women's Day is very special because it marks the century of the rights which were given to women. Although it has been fairly good, but still there are various women in the world who are still suffering and fighting for their rights. The goal of gender equality is yet to be realized. The World Economic Forum states that there are many more years needed to fully realize the gender equality. One reason is that there are still lots of disparities in the salaries of both the sexes.

At the beginning of the year, around 300 Hollywood employees which also included many high profile stars together they dispatched the Time’s Up legal fund for supporting the women’s fighting for sexual misconduct. Also more than 250 employees in UK companies had to submit their gender pay gaps and all over the world women were given a voice. The enormous popularity of the campaigns #MeToo and Time’s Up has helped to bring all the voices to where they actually belong. To make the occasion of the 2018 International Women's Day kind regards grand, the fast food chain company McDonald's has flipped it's famous logo into a “W”
