How has Stephen Hawking Survived ALS so Long?

Stephen Hawking is arguably the most famous scientist alive, but he has also become an inspirational person by surviving  Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease  which normally give it's patients a very short time to live. However, Hawking, 74 has managed to survive it long.

Famous because of his remarkable Big Bang Theory and a number of more in modern physics, Hawking is equivalently famous for surviving this disease. However it is believed that 50% of the people diagnosed with ALS live about 4 years, but Hawking's has managed to live 13 times more along with contributing to Science i.e He has been living in this condition for more than 50 years.

The word Amyotrophic means "No bone Nourishment" and the fact of Hawking surviving this disease for so long has become questionable as this kind of counterbalance is extremely rare. No one, not even the Neurologists know why Hawking has managed to live so long?

In an Interview with New York Times, on overcoming his disability Hawking adviced people : "Concentrate on things your disability doesn't prevent you doing well, and don't regret the things it interferes with," he said. "Don't be disabled in spirit, as well as physically."
