Visaranai, a Tamil docu-drama about the exploitation of prisoners and police corruption has been picked as India's official entry to the Oscars - the 89th Academy Awards - in the Best Foreign Language Film category for 2017. Based on the lives of four migrant workers who are accused of a crime they never committed, Visaranai (Interrogation) shows these migrant workers from Tamil Nadu being picked on by the police in Guntur. This leads to them being enmeshed in a web of crime and politics and they are finally killed in an encounter. The movie has similarities to some real-life events. Visaranai, which is based on the novel written by an auto-rickshaw driver, M Chandrakumar, popularly known as Auto Chandran, is director Vetrimaaran's third film and is produced by Dhanush’s Wunderbar Productions. Chandran wrote the book based on the police brutality and corruption that he suffered in his early life. It was selected by the jury at the Film Federation of India from the 29 other films. There were other strong contenders in the race to represent India at the Oscars such as Kannada movie Thithi, Sonam Kapoor's Neerja, Aswin Iyer Tiwary's Nil Battey Sannata, Shahid Kapoor's Udta Punjab and Marathi film Sairaat which lost the race to Visaranai . This choice has for the second year in running bucked the trend of choosing Hindi language films for the prestigious awards. Visaranai is the ninth Tamil film to represent India at Oscars. The last Tamil film to be submitted as India’s Oscar entry was Kamal Haasan’s Hey Ram (2000). Other submissions were Nayakan, Anjali, Deiva Magan and Jeans among others.
