Seventeen years ago, today (July 26) - Kargil Vijay Diwas - our armed forces won us a gritty yet decisive war against Pakistan in 1999.
Tribute of our brave and young soldiers fighting it out in the inhospitable terrain of Kargil flashing on our television etscannot be forgotten.
This day marked the successful completion o "Operation Vijay", which marked yet another bloody nose for a Pakistani estabishment that to this day seems not to either learn from history nor from its long ecord of fail.
Kargil Vijay Diwas, named after the succes of" Operation vijay". On this day, 26 July 1999, India successfully took command of the high outposts which had been lost to Pakistani intruders.
Kargil Day or Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed to mark the end of the Kargil War. The war that lasted about two months was fought mainly in the Kargil sector of Jammu and Kashmir between India and Pakistan. Both sides lost many soldiers and the war came to an end when on July 26, 1999 India fought and took command of the outposts that had been lost to Pakistani intruders. Kargil Vijay Diwas is observed not just in the Kargil-Dras sector but also in New Delhi where the Prime Minister of India pays homage to the war heroes at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate.
Kargil Vijay Diwas represents many things to many people, but to most Indians it represents what we see day in and day out - the selfless and professional approach to service of the nation that our armed forces and their families represent.
While we pay our tributes to those who fought and laid down their lives, it is a good time to ponder upon where these very brave men in uniform serving our country stand in the scheme of things.
Especially since Pakistan is again engaged n stoking up trouble in Jammu and Kashmir and the armed forces have to deal with it again.
Given the various struggles they face - they are, today, indeed the first and last bastion for all problems including terror, infiltration, natural calamities and also civil unrest.
