Around 3,000 metric tonnes of garbage is dumped every day on the Deonar site. If all goes according to plan, the BMC will soon set up a treatment plant for scientific waste disposal on 12 hectares of land of the over 120-hectare Deonar dumping ground.

On June 2, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), which had been appointed as a consultant for setting up a waste-to-energy plant at Deonar, submitted a preliminary draft project report suggesting setting the plant on the 12 hectares near Baba Nagar and Shastri Nagar as it does not fall in coastal regulation zones (CRZ). However, it has been learnt that the BMC has sought additional details from TCS and the detailed report is awaited.

Meanwhile, the municipal corporation has already begun pre-invitation meetings with interested parties and so far, 12 players have evinced interest. "A pre-invitation meet was held on June 6. There are various technologies which companies have been trying to advocate like mass incineration, bio-methanisation, segregation and compost. We are considering municipal waste incineration, but the final decision is yet to be taken," said a senior civic official.
