Janmashtami: The festival of birth of the supreme lord Krishna

Janmashtami, the day of birth of Lord Krishna, is celebrated as a pious festival in India. If we split the word 'Janmashtami', we get two hindi words- 'Janm' and 'Ashtami'. This implies that Lord Krishna took birth in the eighth day of the Bhadra month according to the Hindu calendar. Lord Krishna is prayed by the Hindus as the complete incarnation of the Lord Vishnu, who is the care-taker of this world, according to the holy scriptures (Vedas). Janmashtami is celebrated by almost all the Hindus as Lord Krishna is sought and prayed by every person in their own ways - men pray them as the ultimate supreme god, or as a friend, and women worship Lord Krishna as their lover, or as their son and so on. Whoever they feel and see in Krishna, they worship him accepting their own relation with Lord Krishna in that way. This is very well proved in the holy scripture of the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Geeta that Krishna was worshipped as a friend and teacher by the warrior 'Arjuna', he was worshipped as a friend by the queen Draupadi, and was loved by all the people of Vrindavan as a naughty boy, with all sorts of attractive features, a very charming face, playing flute, always cherishing life in the best way, eating butter, or 'makhan', by stealing from the women of Vrindavan, and powerful enough to kill the evil powers like King Kansha and always helping all the creatures in this world. Besides these, Lord Krishna has played a pivotal role in teaching us a way of living in this modern time or 'Kaliyuga'. Previously also there was incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the name of Lord Rama who killed the demon Raavan and established peace and prosperity in the nation. But the way Lord Rama lived teaches us how to live a pure life will all sorts of pious deeds, as he established 'Ram-Rajya' about which it is said that there was so peace and prosperity that no people locked their doors or houses in fear of theft. All were happy and satisfied with their lives and had become good souls. However this 'Ram-Rajya' is not possible in today's world and Lord Vishnu was knewing it. So he took birth again in the 'Dwaparyuga' as Lord Krishna will as his powers and supreme qualities to teach us how to sustain in the world full of miseries and bad people, and how to continue doing good deeds without getting influenced by these evil factors. Lord Krishna showed the good path to follow in all adverse situation by his knowledge taught to the warrior 'Arjuna', at the most adverse time when Arjuna was totally confused that what he has to do in his life. He was at the verge of the great war of Mahabharata when he had to fight all his relatives, teachers and brothers, whom he loved so much. But due to the effect of their evil deeds they had become sinful to be killed. Still Arjuna was confused, what should he do. At that crucial time, Lord Krishna gave the great knowledge of the 'Bhagavad Geeta'. It is the most authentic and trusted way to learn true knowledge and lead a happy life, leading to ultimate satisfaction.

1. Celebrations of the ceremony of birth of the Lord Krishna

On this auspicious day of Janmashtami, all the temples are decorated, people offer many things to the 'Bal Gopal', or Lord Krishna. 'Bal Gopal', the infant stage of Lord Krishna is worshipped by keeping a deity of Lord Krishna in the form of a child, in a swing or the 'Palna', where infant children are kept swinging. It is like a bed for the new born baby, which people swing to celebrate and cherish the birth of Lord Krishna in this mortal world to show us the right way to live. However in my view the best way to celebrate Janmashtami is to read the Bhagavad Geeta, the ultimate gift of God to the mankind. Everyday 2-3 pages studying would be sufficient to enlighten our minds and souls and to live a happy life. We all should completely surrender to the ultimate Lord Krishna and should have strong faith in him that he will show us the right way, each and every moment, whenever we get troubled, as he showed it to 'Arjuna' once. HARE KRISHNA, HARE KRISHNA, KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE; HARE RAMA, HARE RAMA, RAMA RAMA HARE HARE
