Shooting in Florida: A gunman open fires in a school in Parkland. 17 killed!

17 people were killed in a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, on Wednesday, according to law enforcement officers on the scene.

As students at a Florida high school huddled together in classrooms and auditoriums while a gunman stalked the hallway Wednesday, they reached out to their parents and loved ones to let them know what was happening.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said 'The suspect, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, is in custody,'
'Cruz had armed with "countless magazines" and an AR-15 rifle,' the sheriff said.

Cruz was a former student at the school and expelled for unspecified disciplinary reasons.

Superintendent Robert Runcie of the Broward County School District told reporters that outside the school they had received no concerns about Cruz.

“We received no warnings,” he said. “Potentially there could have been signs out there. But we didn’t have any warning or phone calls or threats that were made.”

“It’s a horrific, horrific day,” Israel said. “Just pray for this city. Pray for this school, the parents, the folks that lost their lives.”

Superintended Robert Runcie said, "This is a day we prayed would never happening our country."

Reality Check:

There have been a total of 18 school shootings in the US so far in 2018.

Some people have called for guns to be banned, others have argued for a reduction in the type of guns US citizens can legally own, while others have argued for more background checks before someone is allowed to purchase a weapon.
